The Firm

A Bruneian practice, continuous since 1958.

Abdullah Ahmad Architects traces its history to 1956, when a London practice opened an office in Brunei. Registered here in 1958 and known for many years as Arkitek Bersatu, it has been fully Bruneian-owned since 1990 and led by Ar. Haji Abdullah Bin Haji Ahmad as principal since 1992.

History

A1956James Cubitt and Partners (London) opens a Brunei office for private royal and government commissions.
B1957Thomas Richard Butcher joins as resident architect.
C23.04.1958The firm is registered in Brunei (ROCBN P/428/58).
D1972James Cubitt and Partners withdraws from Southeast Asia. Butcher takes over the Brunei and Sabah offices, which become Akitek / Arkitek Bersatu.
E1976The Sabah office becomes independent.
F1980A Kuala Belait office opens.
G1985–86Haji Abdullah Haji Ahmad is invited to join, and becomes a partner holding a fifty per cent share.
H1988Butcher retires. Haji Abdullah and Michael B. Day become equal partners.
J30.05.1990Day retires, and the practice becomes fully Bruneian-owned.
K20.05.2004The name changes to Abdullah Ahmad Architects.
